Restylane is a clear, biodegradable gel made in Sweden, and based on a substance natural to our bodies: hyaluronic acid. Restylane is a dermal filler made of a crystal-clear gel called NASHA™, or Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.
Why we get wrinkles
Our skin is our largest organ and makes up about 15% of our weight. Youthful skin contains a lot of hyaluronic acid, but as we age, we slowly lose our ability to create it. This lowers our skin’s ability to retain water, since binding to water is one of the important things done by hyaluronic acid.
With less water in its makeup, our skin becomes thinner, losing fullness, which makes it looser and more susceptible to the downward pull of gravity. The top layer of skin, the epidermis, protects us from temperature changes and sloughs off the old skin cells as they rise to the surface during their lifecycle. It’s the middle layer, the dermis, that supports and strengthens the skin. It contains collagen, elastin and other substances, including hyaluronic acid, that hold moisture within the skin.
How it’s done
Restylane is used to treat nasolabial folds—those lines that form between the nose and sides of the mouth. It is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, your practioner may anesthetize the treatment area.
Restylane requires no pretesting, but patients should take a few precautions before being treated. Patients should avoid alcohol, aspirin, or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, St. Johns's Wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
Afterwards
Many patients can see results almost immediately and the average treatment results last for 6-9 months, depending on your age, skin type, and lifestyle. Some patients experience temporary redness and swelling at the injection site, typically lasting two to three days.
