Anesthesia: Usually general
Location: Surgery Center or Hospital.
Surgery Length: 1-3 hours.
Length of stay: Outpatient - home the same day.
Discomfort: Moderate to Severe depending whether or not your nasal bones were involved in the surgery. The pain is tolerable with the use of prescribed pain medication. Anticipate 3-14 days of this medication. A humidifier and nasal saline drops will help to keep your nasal passages moist and comfortable.
Swelling: Improves in 10-14 days and will resolve completely in 3-6 months when adhering to post-operative instructions. Sleeping with your head elevated for the first few weeks and applying ice in the first 48 hours helps substantially in keeping the swelling at a minimum.
Bruising: Improves in 5-7 days and will diminish in approximately 10-14 days, some have no bruising at all.
Numbness: Temporary numbness, if it occurs, can last 1-2 months.
Bandages: Surgical tape, splint and nasal packing are placed at the completion of surgery to stop bleeding and promote healing. The packing is removed the following day in our office and the splint is removed at 1 week. Do not attempt to remove them yourself. A removable splint will be fitted for sleeping purposes at 1 week as well.
Sutures: Absorbable sutures are used on the interior of the nose and do not require removal.
Make-up: May be worn after the splint and tape have been removed. We can provide you with a make up camouflaging brochure or video if you desire.
Back to work: You may feel capable of returning to work within a week of your surgery, however, your appearance may be a determining factor. If your job requires heavy lifting or bending for long periods of time, wait 2-3 weeks.
Exercise: Walking is encouraged for the first 2 weeks, after which, light exercise can be resumed at 3 weeks, leading up to your normal regimen without restrictions at 6 weeks. Avoid all contact sports for the full 6 weeks.
Final Result: May be seen as early as 3 months or as late as 6-12 months following the surgery. Adhering to all instructions given by your surgeon is essential to the outcome of your surgery.
