How Juvederm Works
Juvederm is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. It’s injected under the skin using a fine needle to augment, or fill, the soft tissue of the dermis—the dense inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis—to add volume and help diminish wrinkles and folds such as “smile lines” or nasolabial folds (the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).
Juvederm is a natural substance that requires no pretesting, however some precautions should be taken prior to treatment. Patients should avoid alcohol, aspirin, or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, St. Johns's Wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
Why we get wrinkles
Our skin is our largest organ and makes up about 15% of our weight. Youthful skin contains a lot of hyaluronic acid, but as we age, we slowly lose our ability to create it. This lowers our skin’s ability to retain water, since binding to water is one of the important things done by hyaluronic acid.
With less water in its makeup, our skin becomes thinner, losing fullness, which makes it looser and more susceptible to the downward pull of gravity. The top layer of skin, the epidermis, protects us from temperature changes and sloughs off the old skin cells as they rise to the surface during their lifecycle. It’s the middle layer, the dermis, that supports and strengthens the skin. It contains collagen, elastin and other substances, including hyaluronic acid, that hold moisture within the skin.
Results
Because Juvederm is a simple, non-surgical wrinkle treatment, there is minimal recovery or downtime. You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Many patients only need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. And, one treatment could smooth your lines and wrinkles for up to 1 year! Results can vary so some patients may need supplemental “touch up” treatments to achieve and maintain optimal results.
