Choosing to have a Cosmetic Procedure is an important decision that comes with many factors to consider. The most important factor is the Plastic Surgeon you choose. Like all major decisions, you should be informed and have knowledge of all aspects involved with your decision. Always conduct research on your Plastic Surgeon and procedure of choice. Remember, it’s your body and you deserve a properly qualified Plastic Surgeon who will provide you with the best post-operative care. Below is the list of criteria and standards you should look for when selecting a surgeon.
Choosing a surgeon Board Certified in Plastic Surgery is the first step in making an informed decision. In the state of Colorado there are currently no laws to confine a physician to only practice medicine or surgery in the field for which they have been trained. Therefore, selecting a doctor who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is a key qualification to look for. Dr. Joesph F. Serota is Board Certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Plastic surgeons who are Board Certified have undergone extensive training; including completing at least five years of surgical residency training after medical school (at least two years in plastic surgery) and have passed a variety of comprehensive plastic and reconstructive surgery exams. They have been evaluated by their peers on their practice of plastic surgery, from both the technical and ethical perspectives and must fulfill ongoing medical education and training requirements.
It’s also a good idea to research your doctor’s hospital affiliations. Knowing your surgeon is affiliated to an accredited health care organization is another step in making an informed decision. A surgical staff appointment to an accredited healthcare organization indicates that the Plastic Surgeon has been reviewed by medical colleagues on their performance and capabilities.
Research the surgeon’s support team. Your M.D. Anesthesiologist is a vital member of the operating team. Training, education and experience are as important in Anesthesia as they are in Plastic Surgery. We use Board Certified M.D. Anesthesiologists, in our surgical facility. We know how important your health is to you. We choose qualified and experienced team members for Dr. Joseph Serota’s operating staff.
Your last step in the decision making process is an initial consultation with the Plastic Surgeon. Again, we know this is a big decision in your life. Your rapport with the surgeon is a key factor in this process. You must feel comfortable with the surgeon to be able ask questions about your chosen procedure. During your initial consultation in our office, Dr. Serota will discuss your expectations and explain the procedure in great detail. Any risks and side effects associated will be discussed and you may view an educational video about the procedure. Directly following your examination, the doctor will review before and after photos with you and discuss any preoperative or postoperative considerations.
It is essential for you to trust and have confidence in your Plastic Surgeon and his staff. We want you to be healthy and safe. We encourage you to make an informed and educated decision. How you feel about the surgeon and their staff is a significant element of your surgical experience. Regardless of the procedure chosen, the surgery’s success lies in the choice of a Plastic Surgeon.
