Gynecomastia is the development of abnormal breast tissue on men, normally on both sides of the chest. The term comes from the Greek words gyne meaning "woman" and mastos meaning "breast." One out of three American men suffer from some degree of enlarged breasts. In fact, correction of Gynecomastia is one of the top five cosmetic surgery procedures performed for men.
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair self-confidence. Men with Gynecomastia often experience feelings of embarrassment and awkwardness, avoiding normal activities such as swimming, exercise and sex. For most men, the most successful way to reduce and reshape their breast is through surgery.
Enlarged male breasts can be reduced by liposuction alone, or liposuction along with skin and tissue excision. The specific technique will depend on your exact circumstances. Board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Joseph Serota, will study your medical history and give you a complete examination to determine which techniques fit your individual needs.
If surgical excision is required, fat and/or glandular tissue is excised and removed from the breasts. In some cases, where a patient has lost weight, removal of excess skin is also necessary. Incisions are made around the areola, resulting in minimal scarring. In many cases, liposuction techniques alone may be used. A small incision is made below the breast fold or under the areola and excess fat is removed through a cannula by vacuum suction. With both approaches, the result is a firmer, flatter chest.
