What sort of anesthetic is used in plastic surgery?
Either local or general anesthetic can be used, depending on how extensive the surgical procedure will be. Many plastic surgery procedures can be done with a local anesthetic, on an out-patient basis, and you can go home afterwards. Examples of that would be eyelid surgery and ear surgery.
When the procedure will be invasive or complex, such as breast augmentation, a general anesthetic is used. That means that you’d be completely unconscious for the duration and would wake with no memory of what happened. A fully qualified anesthesiologist would calibrate and administer the anesthesia, would monitor your vital signs during the procedure, and would give permission for you to go home when you were fully conscious again. In some cases, you might stay overnight in the surgical facility.
