Notes from the Doctor

An increasing number of women are choosing breast augmentation to enhance their appearance. Informationregarding the safety and effectiveness of breast implants, silicone- or saline-filled, has been confusing and controversial for more than a decade, even more so since the FDA again approved silicone implants (with conditions) in November 2006.

As a clinical investigator for a U.S. silicone breast implant adjunct study, I have been providing appropriately selected patients the option of silicone-filled breast implants for over 16 years. Sponsored by Allergan (formerly Inamed & McGhan), this clinical trial has shown that silicone-filled breast implants are safe and effective.

Which implant is best for you? Patients should take into consideration how much breast tissue they have, the quality of the breast tissue and the size of the implants. Other issues such as the feel of the breast are also important to consider during the decision making process. As a board certified plastic surgeon, experienced in both saline and silicone implants and the different methods of insertion, I can help you make the most appropriate decision for you. Through a process of communication and dialogue, I can provide you with information and options that allow you to make an informed choice about treatment. In over 20 years of practicing cosmetic surgery, I have found that this approach helps ensure overall patient satisfaction.

Two organizations that I am a member of, ASAPS and ASPS, have launched an informational website, www.breastimplantsafety.org. The website offers objective and medically grounded information on the safety of breast implants. It presents the pros and cons of the devices currently approved for all uses by the FDA. The site also extensively covers the history of implants, medical research, safety information, clinical trials and links to other informative websites.

Don't be afraid to ask questions when deciding on or preparing to undergo any cosmetic procedure. It is very important for patients to be informed about and comfortable with their decisions. Remember, communication and knowledge are the keys to a successful outcome.
