Notes From The Doctor About Breast Augmentation and Implants
Serving Denver, Aurora, Cherry Creek, and the Northern Colorado Area
An increasing number of women are choosing breast augmentation to enhance their appearance. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), nearly 335,000 women chose breast augmentation in 2004.
Information regarding the safety and effectiveness of breast implants, silicone or saline-filled, has been confusing and controversial for more than a decade, even more so after the most recent round of FDA approvals and news coverage.
It is a woman's right to make informed personal choices based on all available and accurate information about breast augmentation. Two organizations that I am a member of, ASAPS (mentioned above) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have launched an informational website, www.breastimplantsafety.org. The website offers objective and medically grounded information for women and other concerned parties on the safety of breast implants. It presents the pros and cons of the devices currently approved for all uses by the FDA, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of silicone implants. The site also extensively covers the history of implants, medical research, safety information, clinical trials, links to other informative websites and more.
As a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic surgery including breast augmentation, my primary concerns are patient safety and satisfaction. It all begins with patients providing complete medical histories, as well as information on their expectations following surgery. Through a process of communication and dialogue, I provide patients with information and options that allow them to make informed individual choices about treatment. Shared decision-making is at the heart of any doctor-patient relationship and is based on the ethical principles of respect for individual autonomy and dignity. In my over 20 years of practicing cosmetic surgery, I have found that this approach helps ensure overall patient satisfaction.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions when deciding on or preparing to undergo any cosmetic procedure as it’s very important for patients to be informed about and comfortable with their decision. Remember, communication is one of the keys to a successful outcome.
