Silicone Gel Breast Implants

In Denver and Aurora, Colorado

On November 17, 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of silicone gel breast implants for women over the age of 22. This was an eagerly anticipated breakthrough for women interested in breast augmentation. At the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center near Denver, Colorado we now offer these to all qualified women who would like a breast augmentation procedure.

In 1992, without any evidence to support their claims, some women were reported in the media as claiming that their silicone gel implants had caused some connective tissue disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. In response to the national media reports, the FDA withdrew these implants from the market pending further research.

So for 14 years, silicone gel implants were restricted to breast reconstruction patients and a few other small categories of women for whom saline implants were not a good option.

That research is now completed, no causative relationship was found between silicone gel implants and any diseases, and the safety of silicone gel implants is affirmed by the FDA. The silicone gel implants manufactured by two California companies, Mentor and Inamed (currently owned by Allergan), have been approved, and those companies instructed to continue follow-up studies.

An exciting event for the field of cosmetic surgery

The other choice for breast augmentation, saline breast implants, is good in many respects and has given fine results for many women. But many people feel that silicone gel implants have several advantages over saline implants:

  • They look and feel more natural
  • They have less tendency to ripple in any way that can be seen or felt
  • They weigh a little less than saline implants for each given size

If you have saline implants and would like to have them replaced by silicone gel implants, please contact us for a confidential consultation. If you’re wondering which type of breast implant would be best for you, please schedule a confidential consultation with Denver breast augmentation surgeon Dr. Joseph Serota.

Silicone gel breast implant options

Silicone gel breast implants can be placed in the same positions as saline implants:

  • Subglandular – below the breast tissue and above the pectoral muscle
  • Submuscular – below both the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle

Neither of these placements should interfere with subsequent breastfeeding, as in both cases, the implants are beneath the breast tissue.

Whether you choose to have saline implants, or silicone gel implants, we’re confident that you’ll be very pleased with the results. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, like most things in life.
