Anesthesia: Usually general

Surgery Length: 1-2 hours.
Length of stay: Outpatient - home the same day.
Discomfort: Mild to Moderate. The pain is tolerable with the use of prescribed pain medication. Anticipate 3-7 days of this medication.
Swelling: Improves in 10-14 days and will resolve completely in 2-4 weeks when adhering to post-operative instructions. Sleeping somewhat elevated with the help of pillows for the first week helps substantially in keeping the swelling at a minimum.
Bruising: Improves in 5-7 days and will diminish in approximately 10-14 days, some have no bruising at all.
Numbness: Temporary numbness, if it occurs, can last 1-2 months. Permanent numbness may occur in 10-15% of patients.
Bandages: A tight bandage is wrapped around the breasts at the completion of surgery to promote healing. This bandage is removed the day after your surgery and you are fitted in a post-surgical bra. This bra should be worn for 6 weeks and should not be replaced with an under wire or sports bra.
Sutures: Absorbable sutures are used and do not require removal. Steri-strips are placed over the incision and after 3 weeks, they are no longer necessary.
Back to work: You may return to work after 5-7 days. If your job requires heavy lifting or bending for long periods of time, wait 2-3 weeks.
Exercise: Walking is encouraged for the first 2 weeks, after which, light exercise can be resumed at 3 weeks, leading up to your normal regimen without restrictions at 6 weeks.
Final Result: May be seen as early as 4 weeks following the surgery. Sun protection is important in preserving your result, keep scars out of sunlight or use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Adhering to all instructions given by your surgeon is essential to the outcome of your surgery.
