Postoperative Instructions for
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty )
Serving Denver, Aurora, Cherry Creek, and the Northern Colorado Area
- Sleep with your head elevated on several pillows for 2-3 weeks to help prevent swelling.
- Apply ice compresses for 20 minutes each hour while awake for 2 days after blepharoplasty surgery. You may cleanse the eyelid incision as follows:
- Dip a q-tip into a mixture of ½ water and ½ peroxide.
- Gently roll q-tip over incision. DO NOT RUB.
- Apply prescribed ophthalmic ointment to the incision.
- Take the pain medication prescribed:
- Pain and sleep medication, as needed.
- Antibiotics for 5 days.
- Medrol Dospak for one week.
- Artificial tears – solution to maintain lubrication – for one week.
- DO NOT take aspirin-containing medications.
- Avoid bending or lifting heavy objects for at least one week.
- The use of sun blockers after blepharoplasty surgery is strongly recommended to prevent sunburn and swelling.
- The nurse will instruct you in the use of steri-strips. These will be applied for 2 weeks after surgery to help promote wound healing.
- Eye makeup may be applied 7-10 days after blepharoplasty surgery. Do not tweeze your eyebrows for 2 weeks after surgery as infections can occur.
- Please check with your doctor regarding wearing contact lenses, eyeglasses and sunglasses.
