Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Anesthesia: General

Location: Surgery Center or Hospital

Surgery Length: 1-3 hours.

Length of stay: Outpatient - home the same day.

Discomfort: Mild to moderate. The pain is tolerable with the use of prescribed pain medication. Anticipate 3-7 days of this medication.

Swelling: Improves in 10-14 days and will resolve completely in 4-6 weeks when adhering to post-operative instructions. Sleeping with your head elevated for the first few weeks and applying cold compresses the first few days helps substantially in keeping the swelling at a minimum.

Bruising: Improves in 5-7 days and will diminish in approximately 10-14 days, some have no bruising at all.

Numbness: Temporary numbness, if it occurs, can last 1-2 months.

Bandages: None

Sutures: Will typically be removed 6 days after the procedure.

Dry eyes: You may experience temporary dryness in your eyes, especially while outside on a dry or windy day. This condition typically improves within 4-6 weeks. The use of moisturizing drops such as Tears Naturale, found over the counter at most drug stores is recommended to help this condition.

Correction lenses: Eye glasses may be worn immediately following the procedure. Contact lenses may be worn in 1-2 weeks or as soon as comfortable.

Eye Make-up: May be worn shortly after sutures are removed, usually 7-10 days after the procedure. We can provide you with a make up camouflaging brochure or video if you desire.

Back to work: You may feel capable of returning to work within a week of your surgery, however, your appearance may be a determining factor. If your job requires heavy lifting or bending for long periods of time, wait 2-3 weeks.

Exercise: Walking and light exercise encouraged for the first 2 weeks, after which, a normal exercise regimen can be resumed.

Final Result: May be seen as soon as 2 weeks or as long as 6 months following the surgery. Sun protection is important in preserving your result. Always use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Adhering to all instructions given by your surgeon is essential to the outcome of your surgery.
