Are You Getting Enough Vitamin C?

February 4th, 2010

I don’t mean the orange juice you drink in the morning or the grapefruit you enjoy with your coffee. I mean the vitamin C you put on your skin. Vitamin C is one of the most popular and commonly used ingredient found in anti-aging skincare products. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, everyone can benefit from using a topical vitamin C product.

Vitamin C is listed in the ingredients as L-ascorbic acid or ascorbic acid. Newer derivatives of vitamin C may be listed as ascorbyl palmitate, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate.

Vitamin C should be applied to the face daily. It can help protect against UV (ultraviolet) induced cell damage, which is the sun damage that causes premature aging and skin cancers. Vitamin C has been shown to stimulate collagen production, decrease wrinkle depth and have lightening effects on pigmentation.

Unfortunately, vitamin C is very unstable and can oxidize before you get it on your skin. Once oxidized it doesn’t provide any benefit to the skin at all. If your vitamin C product turns yellow it has oxidized and is no longer any good. Throw it away and start fresh with a new bottle.
